The rumor mill is in full swing – and we thought we’d clue you in, just in case you hadn’t heard. A number of reputable publications are reporting that Subaru has a Hybrid WRX STI in the works, and we could see it available as soon as 2017.
Subaru is just about to take the wraps off of its new Impreza, which means that development of a new WRX STI to be built on the automaker’s new Subaru Global Platform (SGP) is likely well underway. Subaru’s new SGP promises significant weight savings and the ability to support an electric powertrain. Worldofcarfans.com reports that the new hybrid Subaru WRX STI will use a unique hybrid arrangement to boost both power and efficiency, and will put to work a 2.0-liter turbo boxer engine alongside an electric motor.
Motorauthority.com reports that if we do see a hybrid Subaru WRX STI, the max output would surpass the current capability of the WRX STI (currently 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque) and could achieve gas mileage of 36 mpg or more.
